Ballroom dancing is a competitive sport as much as an art, and this long-running Penang dancesport event reaches a milestone this year. The 30th Penang International Ballroom Dance Championship takes place on Saturday 31 October 2026 at AC Hotel by Marriott Penang, organised by the Malaysia Ballroom Dance Association (MBDA).
Ballroom competitions typically see couples judged on technique, timing and partnership, and spectators get a close-up view of an athletic discipline that rarely gets the spotlight. Reaching a 30th edition shows how established the championship has become.
Full details – session times, competition categories, spectator tickets and entry rules for dancers – have not been made public on the tourism listing, so contact the organiser directly: Kenji Ooi (+60 10-464 5127) or penangchampionship@gmail.com. Updates are also posted on the MBDA Facebook page linked here.
If you are going as a spectator, ask whether there are separate day and evening sessions; finals are often held later in the day and offer the most dramatic routines. Smart-casual dress is a safe bet for a hotel ballroom event, and it is worth bringing a light layer for the air-conditioning.
