Bukit Mertajam's Friday night market, known locally as 大山脚星期五夜市, sets up along Lebuhraya Muhibbah in Taman Jernih. A January 2026 write-up by Travel With Lens counted at least 150 stalls and described a carnival-like atmosphere, with the market already fully open and packed by about 6:30pm.
The market mainly serves BM's Chinese community, and the food reflects that. Stalls mentioned include yam puffs (both long and round versions), purple rice rolls wrapped in seaweed, meat floss and pork jerky buns, and old-school 'potong' ice cream on a stick. Beyond snacks, there are fruit, biscuit and fresh vegetable stalls, plus clothes and toys – so it doubles as a family shopping trip. As with many Chinese-run markets, Muslim visitors should check stalls individually for halal status.
It is good for families, snack hunters and anyone exploring the mainland beyond Butterworth.
Tips: Travel With Lens found roadside parking straightforward, as long as you do not block anyone's gate. Arrive around 6:30pm for the full spread. The closing time has not been published, so come early rather than late. A separate Friday pasar malam is also listed at Cangkat Damai, Taman Permata, Bukit Mertajam (5pm–10pm, per PenangTime) – we have not confirmed whether the two are related.
