Penang Bird Park in Seberang Jaya is one of the mainland's best-loved family outings, and it makes an easy, budget-friendly plan for the year-end school holidays (5–31 December 2026 for Penang schools). Opened in 1988, it calls itself the first and largest bird park of its kind in Malaysia.
Spread over five acres, the park houses more than 3,000 birds from over 300 species, more than 150 of them Malaysian, in over 150 enclosures. Highlights include two geodesic domes and two large walk-in aviaries, free-roaming pelicans, flamingos, swans, egrets and storks, and hand-feeding of exotic birds. Hornbills are a particular strength, and there are also mouse-deer, arapaima, pythons, crocodiles and tortoises. Animal shows are held on site – ask at the entrance for the day's times.
The park is open from 9am to 6pm every day, including weekends and public holidays. Malaysians save with MyKad (RM50) and MyKid (RM35) rates, and children in Malaysian national school uniform pay just RM25. The park also offers free entry to people with disabilities and to underprivileged visitors. Tickets can be bought online in advance.
Go early in the morning, when the birds are most active and the paths are cooler. Bring a hat, water and insect repellent, and wear comfortable shoes. The air-conditioned restaurant is a useful midday break from the heat.
