Van Praagh Night Market Jelutong (Friday Pasar Malam)

The Friday pasar malam on Jalan Van Praagh – also called the Taman Kheng Tian or Jelutong night market – is one of the biggest on the island. Penang Travel Tips describes it occupying much of Van Praagh Road, with food stalls spilling onto both sides of Jalan Ooi Thiam Siew and Lorong Parit Buntar.

This is a neighbourhood market for the densely populated Jelutong area, so the focus is everyday shopping and dinner: clothes, accessories, housewares and small electronics on one side, and a long run of hawker food on the other. Dishes mentioned across our sources include nasi tomato, putu mayong, muar chee, yong tau foo, Hokkien mee, koay kak, nasi lemak and sugarcane water – and yes, there is usually a stinky tofu stall. Penang Travel Tips found food prices noticeably lower than at Gurney Drive's hawker centre.

Timing varies by source: My Weekend Plan (2026) says 5pm to 10:30pm, Zafigo gives 6pm to 10:30pm and Travels With Sun 6pm to 11pm. Aim for 6:30pm to 8pm for the widest choice.

Tips: bring cash or an e-wallet and your own bags, and expect tight walkways at peak hour. Parking is on surrounding residential roads – please do not block driveways. If you are on the island on a Friday, Sungai Ara has a pasar malam the same night further south.
