Saturday night is Sungai Dua's turn. This pasar malam (夜市) runs along Jalan Sungai Dua in Gelugor, not far from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and draws local crowds for a cheap weekend dinner. Penang Monthly's 2026 feature on pasar malam singles out the Taman Sungai Dua Utama market for its riverside setting.
Food is the main attraction. Travels With Sun lists kebab, nasi lemak, ketupat, biryani and chee cheong fun, while Time Out suggests first-timers start with char koay teow and sticks of satay. There are also stalls selling fresh seafood, vegetables and seasonal fruit, so many locals do their weekend shopping here too.
Timing: My Weekend Plan (2026) and Travels With Sun give about 5pm to 10pm; an older Time Out listing says 7pm to 11pm. Travels With Sun recommends going after 7pm, once all the stalls are set up.
Tips: bring cash or an e-wallet and a reusable bag for produce. On the same Saturday night, My Weekend Plan also lists a separate market at Desa Permai Indah on Jalan Sungai Dua (about 4pm–11pm), described as quieter and family-friendly – useful if you want a later supper.
