Every Monday evening, Lintang Macallum 1 – the lane running between Gat Lebuh Cecil and Gat Lebuh Macallum, just inland from Pengkalan Weld – turns into one of George Town's best-known pasar malam (夜市). It is the city-centre option of the island's weekly night-market rotation, so it pulls in both neighbourhood regulars and visitors staying in the heritage zone.
Expect the classic pasar malam mix: rows of stalls selling cheap clothing, household items and toys, plus a long stretch of hawker food. Guides published in 2024 and 2026 mention char koay teow, lor bak, grilled seafood, fried snacks, cut fruit, waffles, pickled nutmeg and dessert stalls. It is a good place to eat your way through dinner for a few ringgit a plate, and to stock up on snacks for the week.
Opening times differ slightly between sources: the 2026 My Weekend Plan list and Travels With Sun give roughly 5pm to 10:30pm, while Zafigo (2024) says 7pm to 11pm. Stalls set up in the late afternoon, so the safest plan is to come from around 6:30pm when most stalls are trading. Allow about an hour to walk the whole market.
Tips: bring small notes and an e-wallet, carry your own container or bag to cut down on plastic, and keep an eye on your belongings in the crowd. Parking near Pengkalan Weld is tight, so arriving early or walking in from your hotel is easier. Being close to the Weld Quay clan jetties, it pairs nicely with a late-afternoon heritage walk.
