Li Jianxi is a new English-language play from Big Nose Productions, written and directed by Fa Abdul, staged at the waterfront arts space Jetty 35 on Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) over the weekend of 30–31 January 2027.
Set in 1940s Malaya, it follows fifteen-year-old Li Jian Xi, the daughter of an immigrant family who dreams of studying, seeing the world and choosing her own future. Her family, struggling to make a new life far from home, must decide whether to hold her back or let her go. It is a coming-of-age story about tradition, sacrifice and belonging that will resonate with anyone whose grandparents came to Penang with little more than hope. The cast includes Lauren Tan and Ian Lee, and the play runs about 100 minutes without an interval.
With four performances across the weekend and tickets at RM45 (RM25 for under-21s), it is an accessible choice for students, families with teenagers (recommended ages 12 and up) and anyone interested in local stories about the Chinese diaspora. It also falls just ahead of Chinese New Year 2027, which makes it a fitting family outing.
Jetty 35 is beside the clan jetties on Weld Quay, so arrive early to wander the Chew Jetty boardwalk or grab a bite at the Weld Quay and Lebuh Armenian food spots. Parking along Weld Quay is limited at weekends; the Rapid Penang hub at Weld Quay (Pengkalan Weld) is nearby if you prefer the bus.
