Penang Bird Park is one of the few big family attractions on the mainland side of the state, and it is a good reason for island families to cross the bridge. The park says it opened in 1988 as the first and largest bird park of its kind in Malaysia. It covers 5 acres and holds more than 3,000 birds from over 300 species, more than 150 of them Malaysian. There are hornbills, sunbirds, pheasants, free-roaming flamingos and pelicans, and ostriches in the walk-in aviaries and geodesic domes.
Malaysians pay less. According to the park's entrance fee page, MyKad holders pay RM50 and MyKid holders RM35, compared with the standard RM65 adult and RM45 child (below 12) rates. The best deal is for schoolchildren. Kids who turn up in a Malaysian national school uniform pay just RM25, which makes it worth a visit on a weekday afternoon after school. Physically or mentally handicapped and underprivileged visitors enter free.
The park is open from 9am to 6pm every day, including weekends and public holidays, so you can still go during the year-end school break. It also has an air-conditioned restaurant serving local and western food, mouse-deer, crocodiles and other animals besides birds, and Chinese-style wooden bridges over ponds.
The fee page on the park's website does not show when it was last updated, so confirm prices with the park or check its GlobalTix online ticket shop before you go.
