If you live, work or study in Malaysia, the Penang Hill funicular is much cheaper for you. Penang Hill Corporation's ticket page lists a MyKad, MyKid, MM2H and i-Kad Normal Lane return fare of RM16 for adults aged 13 to 59. Children aged 4 to 12 and seniors aged 60 and above pay RM8. The standard rates for other visitors are RM40, RM20 and RM30. If you are differently abled, the funicular is free.
The best deal is the sunrise rate. It is a RM6 return ticket for anyone who works, studies or lives in Malaysia with valid ID, including MyKad, MyKid, MyPR, a visa, i-Kad, MM2H or a work permit. You must buy it at the Lower Station ticket counter between 6.15am and 8am. It is not offered on public holidays, festive seasons, school holidays or at other peak times. That rules out the upcoming year-end school break, so go on an ordinary weekday morning to catch the sunrise and the cool air at the top.
The Express Lane lets you skip the queue for a higher fare: RM40 return for a MyKad adult and RM80 for a standard adult. MyKad seniors pay RM8 on either lane. One-way tickets and special-rate tickets are only sold at the counters. If you hike Penang Hill often, a monthly pass costs RM40 for MyKad holders, a six-month pass RM220 and an annual pass RM440.
The funicular runs from 6.30am to 11pm, about every half-hour, with extra trips when needed. The last train up leaves at 10pm and the last train down at 11pm. Penang Hill Corporation says it may change hours and fares without notice, so check the ticket page before you go.
