Hin Bus Depot's public programme this weekend includes a free talk titled "On Paper and On the Ground: Migrant Workers' Rights in Malaysia", on Saturday 31 October 2026 from 3pm to 4.30pm. It takes place at Ruang Kongsi, COEX at Kilang Besi.
As the title suggests, the session looks at the gap between the rights that migrant workers have in law and what actually happens on the ground. It is a timely topic in Penang, where manufacturing, construction, food and domestic work all rely heavily on foreign labour, and where many residents interact with migrant workers daily without knowing much about the rules that govern their employment.
Entry is free for all, but pre-registration is required through the Google Form linked from Hin Bus Depot's events page. Speaker details had not been listed on the page when we checked, so the form or Hin Bus Depot's social channels are the best place to find out who is presenting.
Talks like this are a good chance to ask questions and meet people working in advocacy, research and community support. Arrive ten minutes early to settle in, and if you fancy making an afternoon of it, Hin Bus Depot's gallery is showing Hoo Fan Chon's solo exhibition, How Long Have You Been Here, until 15 November.
