The Penang State Museum on Farquhar Street in George Town has reopened. The museum board held the official reopening on 23 July 2026, officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Dato' Seri Utama Haji Ramli Ngah Talib, with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow attending. To celebrate, the board gave the public free entry from 24 July to 31 August 2026.
That free-entry period has now ended, and the board's announcements do not list an admission fee after August. Check with the museum before you visit, or email it through the contact page. The museum is open every day from 9am to 5pm except Fridays. It also closes on Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Aidiladha and Chinese New Year.
Farquhar Street is in heritage George Town, so a museum visit fits easily into a walk around the old town. You can also look up the board's other site, its heritage building at No. 57 Macalister Road, which has its own history as the former King Edward VII Memorial Maternity Hospital.
Museums are a good rainy-day option during the school holidays, and the state museum is one of the better-value places to learn Penang's story. We will update this page when the board confirms its current admission rates.
Tips
- The museum is closed on Fridays. Plan your heritage walk around that.
- Check the current entry fee by emailing the museum board before you go, as the free period ended on 31 August 2026.
- Go in the morning, when it is cooler, and combine it with a walk around heritage George Town.
- Follow the Penang State Museum Board on social media for future free-entry days and events.
Not yet confirmed by the organiser: admission fee after 31 August 2026, MyKad vs foreigner rates. We'll update this page when details are published.
